Who are the poor?

Usually when we think of poor people, we think of a faraway place in Africa, with half-starved people eking out a living on their tiny plot of land in an isolated rural village.

It is true that there are rural people living in extreme poverty. And they certainly need our help. It is for these extreme poor that excellent organizations such as Hope International exist – we highly recommend support of these non-profits.

But. It may sound a little tough, but the REWX is not involved in rural extreme poverty.

Those who work with rural poor people in isolated areas need relatively huge resources to get there geographically. And it takes an (admirably) large investment in time and money to make a sustained difference, far away from everything.

What about the REWX?

The REWX invests in urban communities that are poor, but not extremely poor or isolated. The REWX works with URBAN POOR communities, where a small amount of money can go farthest towards creating sustainable jobs.

Why?

With the urban poor:

  • Existing businesses can be helped to grow quickly because they have access to the city.
  • The community more often has enough basic infrastructure for quick business growth.
  • Businesses in the poor community are easier to get to.

The REWX is not looking to help a small few of the most-extreme poor. The REWX goal is to make the biggest difference (what we call the MPB or Maximum Possible Benefit), and to make it sustainably.

For this reason, the REWX works in urban poor communities.
